Agency Description

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is a new office created under Mayor James F. Kenney. The primary duty of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion is to make recommendations over the long term that work to build a more inclusive City workforce related to race, ethnicity, disability status, gender, and sexual orientation by working with those in government and the private sector to increase opportunities for all who have suffered from discriminatory practices.

Job Description

The Director of the Mayor’s Commission on People with Disabilities is responsible for advancing strategic policies and programs for people with disabilities in the City of Philadelphia and for advising the Mayor’s Office and Philadelphia City Government on the needs of residents with disabilities.  The Director should work to promote the office as a liaison between people with disabilities and the City of Philadelphia, and to educate residents and the city workforce on the needs of the disability community. With the support of the Mayor’s Commission on People with Disabilities, a commission made up of local leaders around issues facing people with disabilities in the City of Philadelphia, the Director should create and promote programs that make the City of Philadelphia a great place to live for people with disabilities, and assure that people with disabilities have a voice in the City of Philadelphia government.

Essential Functions: 

  • Serve as a liaison between City government and the local community of people with disabilities
  • Work with City departments, agencies, and offices to develop policies and procedures to promote the well-being of people with disabilities within the city
  • Manage and solicit advice from the Mayor’s Commission on People with Disabilities
  • Support the growth and development of the City’s community of people with disabilities
  • Create opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in government
  • Execute data-driven, outward facing programs, initiatives, and events that impact people with disabilities in Philadelphia

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years experience working in the community engagement field
  • Minimum of two years experience working in advocacy around people with disabilities
  • College degree preferred

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in community engagement, particularly with the community of people with disabilities
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in strategic planning and executing programs and initiatives
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences, including senior government officials
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Proficient in Google Docs, Microsoft Office Suite, and data analysis

Additional Information

Philadelphia residency is not required at the time of application. Once hired, employees have six months to move into and maintain residency in the City of Philadelphia as a condition of employment.
